L'Orage by William Adolphe Bouguereau

I entered a beautiful home on Friday night where this painting hung over the mantelpiece. It was the first thing you noticed when you walked in, and I was intrigued. I wanted to know the story. I thought that it had to come from something in literature. My friend thought it was just about a couple of girls by the sea- turns out he was right. It is simply titled, "The Storm." There is no story other than the one you imagine. What do you think? Would you have given a more descriptive title? What story do you imagine?

  1. It looks a bit haunting and mysterious to me. Just like you said, it grabs your attention and it is intriguing.

I guess the story I imagine is of two sisters waiting for the 'storm' (how original am I?) The younger one is scared and the older one is comforting her. However, the one being comforted is not as worried as the one who doesn't have someone to comfort her. So the oldest looks out of her painting, asking you, the spectator, to help and comfort her. I think I would have titled it "Help is on the way" so as to not leave me feeling like I have to help but can't do anything about it. lol. Love you Azie!

  2. Very insightful Palmyra. It does seem that she is reaching out to the viewer for help. I like your title - very nurturing and reassuring.
